Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we are most often asked about staying with us.

A.
Yes. The only people inside the gate are that day's guests. The main house, the garden, the tea house “Joshun,” the guest house and the spa are all yours to use freely throughout your stay. You won't pass other guests or share any common areas. And on that day, the only guests we are thinking about are you.
A.
The guest house sleeps up to 5 adults and 2 children. The whole building, approx. 105 m², has two bedrooms, two toilets, and a spa and bath area. For visits without an overnight stay, such as a daytime tea ceremony or a meal, please ask — we arrange these separately.
A.
We're sorry, but our kitchen does not operate under halal certification. We can, however, accommodate vegetarian, vegan and shojin (Buddhist temple) cuisine, as well as allergies, if you let us know in advance. We can also adapt the menu to exclude pork and alcohol, including mirin and cooking sake. Please let us know at least one week before your stay.

With just one group a day, there is a lot we can do. In fact, we'd like to hear in advance what you enjoy, what you'd rather avoid, and even how much you like to eat. If you let us know at least one week before your stay, we will build the menu around it.
A.
Yes, of course. The open-air bath, sauna and thermarium are reserved for that day's guests alone. As no other guests will see you, Hachikan places no restrictions on guests with tattoos. In the spa area, please wear a swimsuit or the sauna wear we provide.
A.
For your safety, we ask the following guests not to use the spa:
・Anyone who has been drinking alcohol
・Anyone with a fever or an infection, or who is otherwise unwell
・Anyone whose doctor has advised against bathing or sauna use because of heart disease, high blood pressure, a respiratory condition, epilepsy or similar
・Anyone who is pregnant or may be pregnant

If you have any concerns, please consult your doctor before your stay. Even if you can't use the spa, you can still enjoy the tea ceremony, your meals and time in the garden.
A.
Children under 16 may not use the spa on their own. Please make sure they are accompanied by a parent or a responsible adult.

All indoor areas are non-smoking. For guests who would like to smoke, we provide an ashtray and will show you to a designated spot, such as the machiai (the waiting arbor in the tea garden) or the engawa veranda.

We're sorry, but we are unable to accept pets or any other animals.

Your stay runs from 1 p.m. to 11 a.m. the next day — a full 22 hours. Late check-out is possible only when there is no booking for the following day. It is charged at JPY 33,000 per hour, for up to two hours; beyond that, the full room rate applies. If you would like to extend, please let us know by the day before.

Please tell us about it. Birthdays, wedding anniversaries, yuino betrothal ceremonies, retirements, a return to good health — with only one group a day, we can prepare the whole setting around your occasion. We are happy to discuss working a celebratory dish into the menu, or changing the scroll and flowers in the tea house to suit the day. If you would like a professional photographer, please ask in advance. When you book, we would be glad to hear what kind of day you are celebrating.
A.
Yes. Ohara's ancient temples — Sanzen-in, Hōsen-in, Shōrin-in and Jakkō-in — are about ten minutes away by car, and we will take you there by private car at whatever time suits you. Some visits, such as Hōsen-in's autumn evening viewing, look very different depending on the ticket and the timing, so we are happy to arrange them for you. We can also help with trips into central Kyoto, or to Kurama and Kibune. For the experiences you can enjoy during your stay, please see our Excursions page.
